Curcumin: Powerful Anti-Inflammatory and Cancer Therapy

Turmeric (curcuma longa) roots and powder.

Curcumin is an active ingredient in turmeric that boasts powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cancer-fighting effects.

Researchers have investigated curcumin for its potential in improving Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and stroke damage. It can also promote brain health as a result of its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Dr. Marcel Hernandez

From cancer research labs come studies that show curcumin interferes with several important molecular pathways involved in development, growth, and spread of cancer.

Curcumin can kill cancer cells in the laboratory and slow the growth of surviving cancer cells.

In animals, curcumin has been shown to inhibit the formation of cancer-causing enzymes and the development of several forms of cancer, as well as shrinking tumors. Human studies of curcumin’s benefits in cancer prevention and treatment are in the early stages.

Some scientific studies indicate that curcumin is not well-absorbed orally. Consequently, large doses are required for small amounts to reach the blood. More-absorbable forms of curcumin have been developed, and because curcumin is fat-soluble, it’s important to take oral curcumin with some form of fat.

At the Hernandez Center, we administer curcumin via IV infusion in carefully moderated doses, so that it can go directly to the cells where it is needed.

Preliminary results with our patients show that curcumin can relieve the inflammation caused by chemotherapy and decrease tumor markers on conventional cancer monitoring blood tests.

For naturopathic doctors, curcumin comes as yet another wonderful gift from the Earth – with few or no side effects, and powerful positive results for our health.
